For the past year I have been creating adorable affordable blog designs that mimic a traditional scrapbook page. It’s been an awesome experience, one that has taught me countless things about life, art, people and myself. But I’ve learned that scrapbooks are not my style anymore, not in the traditional sense anyway. I believe that less really is more, so I prefer not to use a multitude of patterns, textures and overwhelmingly elements.

I want to focus my talents on designs that mesh with my new style which takes photos, a few coordinating colors, perhaps a few cleverly chosen graphics and creates something clean and simple that speaks volumes.

To quote one of my favorite songs, "It's been a long, a long time coming but I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will." There are changes a foot here at Hippo Scraps (and discounts). Things might look a bit strange for a few days so stay with me and enjoy the music.

The lovely photobucket informed me without warning that I had exceeded my monthly bandwidth and I'll have to wait till next month to get my images back. Next month is a long time. I spent so many hours, and wasted tons of notebook paper, while coming up with my services and prices. I researched my competitors, made lists, went out of my way not to copy anyone.

To find that someone has taken all my hard work and copy and pasted... AUGH! It makes me so mad. Not to mention that they are taking business away from me while using my STOLEN information.

Why do people do this? What can we do about it?

p.s. To that certain person I would like it say: STOP IT, GIVE IT BACK. DO THE WORK ON YOUR OWN!!

I got this lovely purple award from my first ct leader Krystal two weeks ago. Look at it again.

I got this one today from my second ct leader Laura. It is the same one but a little smaller and with sparkles all over it!

Although I am thankful for both of these awards, thanks ladies, I must wonder who in the world added/erased those sparkles?! Do these awards perhaps mean different things? Have I been promoted in the TLC department, upgraded to sparkle? And if so why is the sparkle one smaller? Mmmmm.....

I was tagged by Lauri at Paperville to go to the 6th picture folder on my computer and choose the 6th picture...post it and write about it! So here it is... tada!

It's a flower arrangement I made for our bathroom. I took up floral arranging in college, no class or anything just dull boring white spaces that needed a bit of color. Those arrangements are long gone now but recently I felt the need to do another one. I bought a vase and some flowers on sale at Joann and put this little beauty together. I thought it came out well so I took a picture of it and it just happened to be the 6th photo in the 6th folder. Proof that I have creative talents outside the computer!

Heritage Book

C.W. Picket & Co. has this awesome kit available called Heritage Book Maker. I was lucky enough to work with this and I feel in love. This kit contains 8 layered .psd templates, you just open them up in photoshop and get right to work. Everything is fully customizable! It includes text boxs and paths, and places for pictures.

As the name points out they are made to be used as a heritage book. You put all your information pictures and customization on the pages, compile the pages and you have an awesome book great for family history projects. But you can use these however you want. They are great for easy layouts when you run out of ideas.

I think they would be a great beginners tool. I wish I had these to work with when I first started learning photoshop. What a great reason to learn. Anyway I never talk this much about a kit. Here are the layouts I made with it. I also used Laura's kit called Paperbag Astronaut to decorate my pages. I looped them together so it looks more like a book.

I'm got on another CT! It's with Laura from C.W. Picket & Co. It's not "official" yet but I wanted to announce it here anyways so that I can post a few layouts I've made. Here is the layout I made for the ct call. I used her Happy 2009 kit. It's a freebie so go download it and see what you can create. She also has a ton of other cute freebies and great kits at great prices to play with! Although this CT is more formal then my other one (I'm learning new stuff and feeling stupid) I am so excited about this!

But after working all evening and into this morning I have pretty much fixed it again. And I have everything BACKED UP! Anyway... I have some exciting news to tell you! I've had this really strong feeling all day that I am forgetting something. I can't figure out what it is. I've paid all the bills, the dishes are done, the house is clean enough, I'm making dinner right now. I mailed that thank you letter to my grandma. I paid that late fee. I don't think it's anyone's birthday. I have no appointments.

I am almost done with the draft for Jan, I'm waiting on Lauri and Randall to email me back. I do have some buttons for sweet shoppes that are due today, but I am going to do those soon. I don't think I have a ct layout I need to do yet. What is it?

Is there a client out there that I've neglected? Is there an email or comment I have forgotten to reply to? Is there a deadline today that I am about to miss? What is it? Does anyone know? Could it be you? Please please leave a comment if you are waiting for something from me or if you have any idea what this feeling could be from.

My website is back up! It took some time, and lots of effort but I have restored my website. It looks different because I had to start from scratch but I think it will work. I'm quite proud of myself, so go check it out and order something!

Lucky Me tab tutorial

Here is another layout set I made from the "Lucky in Love" kit. The playing cards in Krystal's kit work so perfectly as tab labels. I really like this look and it is a piece of cake to achieve.

How to make the perfect tabs:
1. Purchase "Lucky in Love" here. It's on sale for $1 so hurry, it's so worth it!
2. Pick out your favorite card and drag it onto your document
3. Paste a paper of choice on a new layer directly on top of the card layer
4. Double click on your paper layer and set the stroke to white
5. Resize and move the paper so that it covers all but the top word of the card

*Achieve the bottom tab the same way except have your paper cover all but the bottom word of the card instead of the top. The words are already written backwards for you!

Lucky in Love

Blinking header freebies!

It's been over a week since I posted anything (blushing) so to make up for my slack I have made you two different header freebies with backgrounds to match. Big deal right? Well, yes it is, THEY MOVE! There is a red and green cardinal one and a blue and white snowflake one. They are my first moving images and I think they turned out great!

They do however require a few different steps to install. It looks complicated but it's really not.

First:
1. Install the matching background just like you would for my other backgrounds.
2. Go into your header (layout-page elements-header) and remove any image you may have.
3. Also remove any description text you may have.
4. Save your header.
5. Go into "layouts" then "fonts and colors"
6. Change the blog title and border color to white

Now you should have a totally white header- don't touch it anymore! And the background.

Then:
1. Pick which header of mine you want and click it
2. This will take you to my Photobucket account. Look on the right side and find where it says "html code"
3. Click that code to copy it
4. Paste that code into an html gadget (layout-page elements-add gadget)
5. Move that gadget directly below your header (left click it, hold the click down and drag the box)

The white header will still show as space but that doesn't matter right? If it bothers you then don't use this header or tutorial. I hope that all made since. If not then just look at the pictures and enjoy!

Wrapped around your fingers

Here is a layout I just made using three kits from my CT designer SWAK-Scraps!

For the glitter hearts, borders, and staples I used her "Just Lovely" kit. I used her "Tomboy Princess" kit for the string, white swirl, and part of the background. For the other part of the background I used a paper from her "Sweet Nothings" kit. Confused about the two papers for one background? Don't worry it's super easy. Here is what you do:

1. Go buy the kits (scroll down until you see the section labeled designers on the left sidebar. Click SWAK).
2. Open Photoshop and create a new image
3. Paste the "Sweet Nothings" paper number 9 (the brown one with white dots) on a new layer
4. Paste her "Tomboy Princess" paper number 15 (the blue jeans looking one) on a separate layer directly above the brown one.
5. Double click on the second layer and turn the opacity to 80%

That's it. You now have a gorgeous background and amazing kits to play with!

At Organizing Junkie they do a thing called Monday Menu. My husband mentioned a few days ago that I should plan out a menu before we go grocery shopping and this was the push I needed to actually do it. In celebration of my achievement I've made some shopping lists for all of you! They are the perfect size to print three at a time! Just cut them out stack them up and staple them together. Or if you want to be fancy you can push holes in them and tie them together with ribbon. I think these would be so cute as little gifts or stocking stuffer. First here is my menu for the week:

My husband just pointed out that one of my buttons was spelled wrong. I had a b instead of a d on the word adorable. I blame it on my dyslexia :) I've very confused as to why no one has pointed this out to me before. But anyway if any of you have the misspelled one posted on your blog I would be very appreciative if you can change it to the fixed one. Thanks! Also I've added a smaller size to my winter backgrounds so if you've tried to add one of mine and it was too large you can try again and it should fit, yay!

Happy Friday! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving. Here is the perfect freebie for all of you with food still on the brain. They are a set of three holiday recipe cards! Spending my first Thanksgiving away from home made me grateful for my mothers cooking. This white girl from AZ doesn't do too good with Cuban Thanksgiving food. Nor food cooked without love and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Therefore I am determined to never go another holiday without the good food from my childhood. I think I'm going to print these babies out and send a bunch to my mother and grandmothers so they can fill them out and return them to me. If you are in a similar situation I would suggest trying it with me. If you are a mother who's daughter, or even son, has recently moved away, please fill some of these out to send to them. I won a homemade purse a few days ago and have just received it in the mail! It's from Regina at Miss Gina Designs. I'm not much of a purse girl but I really do like this purse. It's so well made. I searched and searched but could not find any flaws. It really blows my mind how she did it. It looks like it came from a department store. I love her attention to detail. The inside looks even cooler then the outside. I'd highly recommend getting one for yourself!

I got on my first Creative Team! Although I'm still not entirely sure what a ct is for, I am way excited. It's for Krystal at Scraps- SWAP. She's given me three of her great kits to create things with, so be on the lookout for some new cute stuff. In the meantime go check her blog out. I'd also like to mention that I did away with the polka-doted background. I think it's less busy without it. I've also slightly changed my header on my website to fit the season, isn't it cute? I really would like to get rid of the blue rectangles that are under the sidebar headers but I can't figure out how to change the heading color. I've tried everything?!? so for now I must endure. Anyway thanks Krystal and go me!

First Newsletter

I just sent out my first newsletter. I have been having trouble with my mass email function on my website so I asked my hubby a few time to help me fix it. He did not exhibit any intention of helping me any time soon so I got impatient and hand moved every single email into my gmail contacts. My Christmas giveaway is now officially over. I've completed and sent out everyone's designs. If you haven't received yours, it's because you didn't reply to my emails, or you didn't leave an email for me to contact you at. If you are still interested (or think this is a mistake) go ahead and reply and I'll get your free items to you.

I did some really good work during this last week and I thank all of you who inspired me. I hope everyone is fully enjoying their designs. I appreciated all the praise and thank you's. :) Please don't forget to tell all your friends and family about my work.

I've been really wishy-washy about what I'd like to do next with my business. I've decided that the reason for doing it is for fun, money is great and all, but frankly I just enjoy creating, even if it's for free. I've also been in the Christmas spirit (we already have a wreath hanging from our front door) so I want to spread a little cheer. Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to build up my gallery/portfolio. I'll choose five or so people to win a free design from each of these categories:

I was very surprised today when I checked my email. It informed me that I had a new comment! I love comments so I read it right away. Lisa from Serah's Soap Blog left a complement on my designs and tagged me today for the 6 Interesting Things Game! This was a very big surprised because I have never interacted with her or even visted her blog before. I guess people that I don't even know enjoy my work. That's exciting to me so here are my interesting things.

Announcing the birth of Hayden Hunter Clites 7 lbs 12 oz 20 1/2 inches long. He was born on the 20th of September at 1:14 am. In celebration of the birth of my best friends first child, I have created what I think is something almost as cute, perfect, precious, and adorable as a newborn baby. I'm calling them baby blogs. What are Hippo Scraps?

Why are they called Hippo Scraps?

When my husband and I were dating I called him a hypocrite and he called me a "hip..hip..hippopotamus" It was cute and from then on he has called me his hippo. I love it, hence Hippo Scraps.

Who am I?

My name is Ashley. I was born and raised in the small town of Thatcher, Arizona. After high school I received my AA degree at EAC. I then moved away to attend BYU-I. It was a great experience for me but I failed my economics class so I moved back to AZ and attended another community college. My roommates where terrible and our apartment was over 100 degrees inside so one day when my "fiance" came to visit me, he lifted me onto his white stallion and we rode into the sunset. Well, we really just shoved some stuff in my car and drove away.

I've been married to that wonderful man named Dan for almost 2 years now. We are still living in Orlando and besides Disney and the beach I hate this state. I really really want to move back home or to Idaho or Utah. I love cold weather, bright night skies, the smell of a wood burning stove, and snow covered mountains. I live for Christmas, it's my absolute fav.

I'm very much a girly girl. I love recording memories, designing Hippo Scraps, decorating my home, baking cookies, downloading goodies, and organizing my closets. My favorite place to be is at home cuddling with my husband. But I also love camping, going to the beach, and four-wheeling in the desert. I love making things that make people happy. I recently discovered that I enjoy learning new things and making money from home. So here I am trying to make a little money and a lot of smiles. Life is good. Isn't this gorgeous? I love the slightly weathered blue polka-dots and the twine wrapped around the background. If you love this too then read on. This is part of my September special. It was all inspired by a quote that I found from Pres. Hinckley.

How to install:

First-
1. Scroll down and choose which image you want.
2. Copy the code directly under the image you have chosen.

Then-
1. Sign into blogger if you haven't already. Click on "Layout" you will see the Add and Arrange Page Elements screen. Click "Add a Gadget."
2. Select "basics" on the left side. Scroll down and find where it says HTML/JavaScript then click it.
3. You will see the Configure HTML/JavaScript screen. Under content you'll see a large box, paste the HTML code (found under whichever image you choose) in that space.
5. Click save and you are done.

Hippo's need lots of attention so to hug a hippo simply add a link back to him.

To get a little more organized I had to break a few links. If you have used any of my free items and you are now seeing an image from photobucket saying the image has moved, well it has. BUT, I have fixed all of them. Please delete your current image and install it again just like before to fix this problem.
